Where to start knitting

Yes! You want to start knitting. I think it’s the most fun hobby to have. At least, that’s what I think :).

But where to begin? Do you start with buying your supplies? Which yarn do you use? What is a good pattern for beginners? I will explain in this article.

Get inspired when you just start knitting

Knitting is not just your grandma’s hobby anymore.Knitting is hot and you want to join. What I would do first, is to get inspired. Find things you like, find your style and what you would like to knit (sweaters, blankets, tops, socks).

Tip: follow me on Pinterest. I have multiple boards with all kinds of knitting inspiration. Also, Pinterest is a great way to find your own knitting style.

Get your supplies

You just need a few things when you are just starting out. The basics include knitting needles and yarn.

Tip: When just starting out, select a larger needle size (5mm / US 8 or up). With larger needles it’s much easier to see how your project will turn out. And it’s less fidgety. Also, try more bulky yarn for your first project. Delicate yarns, like lace, are very difficult to handle. It will drive the most experienced knitter crazy.

Do you want to know more about the supplies you need? You can download your free copy of the e-book ‘Knitting essentials – what you need to begin’.

Learn the basic techniques

The first techniques you want to learn are:

  • Casting on
  • Casting off
  • Knit stitch
  • Purl stitch

If you know these 4 techniques, you can make a lot of knitwear.

Insider tip: I’m currently working on an online course, especially for beginner knitters. These techniques will be explained and I also provide very slow video’s for you to get started. If you want to be the first to know when this online course will be online, you can leave your e-mail here.

Find your first pattern

Your first pattern should be easily accessible. You don’t want complicated instructions or colour changes. That will all come in time. You will get better and better and you can make anything you want.

My personal tip is to start with an easy project, like a scarf. You will learn the basics of casting on, the knit and purl stitch and casting off. I’ve collected 10 beginner friendly scarf patterns. And the best part: they are all free to download.

Off course you will have tons of questions. That’s why I’ve created the knitterslounge.com community. You can ask literally ANYTHING to our community. I try to answer them as quickly as possible. And there’re also other knitters who can help you.

Just start knitting. Don’t mind the mistakes. Remember that you will get better and it will be more fun in time. Don’t stop and try new things.
