When you’re just starting out with knitting, a scarf is a perfect project. It can be fairly easy, but you will encounter a lot of techniques to learn. We selected beginner friendly knitting patterns for scarfs for you. And the best part: they are all free for download. I’ve personally checked all these patterns in order to make sure they are truly beginner friendly and readable for beginners.
Free pattern 1 – Great Start Super Scarf by Michelle Greenberg
The name says it all: this is truly the Great Start Super Scarf. You will use the knit stitch only. Because of the large needle size (9mm US 13) it will be a quick knit. And larger needles are perfect for beginners. You can make the scarf as long as you would like. This is the best start for beginner knitters.

Free pattern 2: Archer Scarf by Kiki Geiger
This pattern of the Archer scarf has a pleasing linear design and a thick texture. Because of the texture it gives a masculine vibe but it’s definitely suitable for everyone. You will use the knit and purl stitch for this project. The knitting needles you will use are a size 5mm (US 8). Don’t worry about the extended glossary mentioned in the pattern. You will only need a few of those.

Pattern 3: Easiest Farrow Rib Scarf by Diana T
Another beauty! With Easiest Farrow Rib Scarf this scarf pattern you will hold 3 strands of the yarns together which will create this bulky effect. You can also use a (super) bulky yarn to get this effect. Make sure to make a swatch in order to see what your project will look like. You will need needle size 9mm (US 13).

Pattern 4: Berry Nice Scarf by Felicity Stewart
This Berry Nice Scarf has another new technique you can learn: the drop stitch. The variation on the knit stitch will give this opening and lengthening effect in the scarf. This technique is clearly explained in the pattern. You will need needle size 6mm (US 10) for this project.

Pattern 5: Betty’s Infinity Scarf by Karin K
Looking for a pattern for an infinity scarf? Then this Betty’s Infinity Scarf is perfect for you as a beginner. The pattern only uses knit and purl stitches with the option to seam in the ends so you can create this infinity loop scarf. Your needles will be a size 9mm (US 13).

Pattern 6: EASYPEASY Scarf by Paula M
This EASYPEASY Scarf pattern makes for a beautiful triangle scarf. Because of its shape you will learn how to decrease and increase. The pattern explains this in an easy matter, with YouTube videos. Read the instructions carefully and you will not only learn new knitting techniques but also end up with a beautiful scarf. You will need 3,5mm or 4,0mm circular needles (US 4 or US 6).

Pattern 7: Side Line Scarf by Fifty Four Ten Studio
This Side Line Scarf is quick, easy, warm and reversible. Because of the super bulky yarn used in this pattern will be very cozy. You will use a K3 P3 (knit 3, purl 3) pattern throughout which will give this great effect. Needle size 9 or 10mm (US 13 or 15) depending on your yarn.

Pattern 8: Honeycomb Scarf by Emily Bolduan
This honeycomb structure is created by slipping stitches in this Honeycomb Scarf pattern. This is explained very clear with accompanied photos. A very fun way to learn this new techniques. Can be made in two sizes: normal or large. Needle sizes 6mm (US 10).

Knits and purls for the win. This Beginner’s Stitch Sampler Scarf pattern is a beautiful way to show you that you can make beautiful designs using only the knit and purl stitch. You will learn 6 different pattern using only knit and purl stitches. Needle size 5mm (US 8).

Pattern 10: Scarf that will not die by Judy Bateman
A very fun scarf to make. This Scarf that will not die pattern only uses knit and purl stitches. But it will be playful because of the setup. A very fun and perfect project for beginners. Needle size 4,5mm (US 7).
